PROGRAMS

The SPCA of Hancock County offers and provides a variety of services to assist people and their pets and the communities we serve. Listed are a few programs offered by the SPCA.

Volunteer Program

Working together to improve the wellbeing of animals is one of the best things we can ever do for our animal friends. Volunteering to support and assist the mission of the SPCA to make this happen is just one way to help animals. If you are interested in becoming a Foster Care Volunteer or an Education Outreach Volunteer and making a difference in the lives of animals, we need your help. Helping to educate or providing care for animals is something that requires a very special commitment - but guarantees many wonderful rewards.

Foster Care

A program which temporarily houses animals that are unable to be adopted due to: available space, age, illness, injury or behavior. A Foster Care Volunteer opens up their home for a few extra weeks or months in order to provide the animal(s) with care, general training, growing or weaning period, and most importantly time, until they are ready for adoption.

Prevent a Litter (The PAL Fund)

To help reduce the number of pets being surrendered to shelters, the SPCA encourages spaying or neutering of companion animals to help with overpopulation. Spaying or neutering will not only prevent unwanted litters, it will also help your pet live a healthier and longer life. The SPCA has developed the PAL (Prevent a Litter) Fund to assist area residents who would like to have their companion animals spayed or neutered but cannot afford the full-cost. While we cannot pay the entire fee for an animal to be neutered, the guardian/owner is only responsible for one-third of the final cost - the SPCA pays one-third with the participating veterinary practice covering the remaining third. We also ask that a condition of receiving a certificate that you volunteer some time at the shelter.

Community Education & Outreach

The SPCA knows that education is the key to understanding why animals are so important to us and what need to do to better care for them to see that they remain happy and healthy. By sponsoring classrooms at area schools so each student receives KIND News (a classroom newspaper that assists in teaching children the value of respect and kindness towards animals), we at the SPCA hope we are helping to educate our children about humane values and principles.

Mobil Adoption Assistance

The SPCA will assist in the transport of adoptable animals from local facilities to other shelters in the state. With an abundance of adoptable animals at one facility and a shortage at another, we can be that link that allows for area shelters to assist one another with placement. Allowing these shelters to focus on daily operation procedures, we can provide the service that would otherwise erode precious work-time at the coordinating shelters.

Sponsorship

You or your business can make a difference by sponsoring and supporting SPCA events and programs. Your financial support will help expand our efforts in Hancock County and provide the SPCA with the safeguard that these programs can remain funded and continue to be successful.
