As you can imagine, a lot goes on in an animal shelter beyond answering the phone, because we are frequently needed by the animals! Phone lines are regularly answered from 12pm to 4pm Wednesdays through Saturdays. Calls made before or after these hours may go to our voicemail, and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We highly recommend calling your local animal control officer if you are searching for a lost pet or have a concern about animal welfare or cruelty, since we do not have an animal control officer on staff and are not a stray holding facility.

You are also welcome to reach us by email or through our social media accounts. We will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

The SPCA accepts relinquished animals by appointment only.

The SPCA shelter is located at 141 Bar Harbor Road (Rt. 3) in Trenton,
south of Ellsworth and north of Mount Desert Island.

Our Mission

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Hancock County (SPCA) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of animal welfare, to the protection, sheltering, and placement of companion animals into responsible, loving homes, to humane education in the community, and to local, state and national animal advocacy.

We are a life-saving shelter serving, first and foremost, local animal populations and pet owners.
